Rational Numbers

For our first blog I would like you to post a number that is rational but is not an integer.  You should also include an explanation of why your number meets this description.

56 comments:

  1. 0.86

A rational is any number that can be written as a fraction (1/3, 5/2 etc)
An integer is a whole number (-2, 3, 2 etc)

0.86 = 43/50 so it is rational, and not a whole number (it is less than 1) and how I got 43/50 was 86/100 simplified to 43/50. Since it can be written over 50 and 100, it is rational but not an integer because its less than one and obviously not a whole number.

  2. One number that is a rational number but not an integer is 1/3.

A rational number is a number that cna be written as a fraction, integer over integer. A integer however is a number that is itself and its opposites such as 1. The number 1's opposites is -1.

  3. 8.25 is a rational number and is not an integer. 8.25 is equal to 8 1/4. I already know .25 = 1/4, so I took the 8 from the 1's place (decimal) and made it as the whole number for the fraction. So the fraction for 8.25 is 8 1/4. 8.25 is an example of a rational number that is not an integer.

A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction or integer.
A integer is whole numbers and their opposites.

  4. 10 1/12 is a rational number but not an integer because rational numbers are numbers that can be written as a fraction, including a fraction. integers are just numbers and their opposites.

  5. I want to comment on Denise's blog post saying that you are correct with your explanation but I don't think that you should have wrote as much. But I agree that 8.25 is a rational number but not an integer.

  6. A number that is rational but isn't an integer is 3/5. This number is not an integer but is rational because it can be written as a fraction (rational) but cant be an opposite of any number (positive to negative, negative to positive).

  7. 0.22 is a rational number that is not an integer.
0.22 is not an integer because it could be written as a fraction (integer over integer). 0.22 as a fraction is 22/100 which can be simplified down to 11/50.

  8. A number which is rational but not an integer is the number -0.99. This is a rational number because this number can be written as a fraction with a denominator which is not zero. However, this is not an integer because an integer are whole and natural numbers, like -1, 0 etc. Therefore, -0.99 is a rational but not an integer.

Yash...integers are WHOLE numbers and their opposites.
Joshua...don't forget that rational numbers can be both positive and negatives.

  10. One example of a rational number, but not an integer is 1/2. This is a rational number because it can be written as a terminating decimal(0.50). This is not an integer because it is not a whole number nor it's opposite. Therefore 1/2 is a rational number, but not an integer.

  11. I want to comment on what Royal said. To add on about what he said about natural and whole number, 1,2,3,4,5....are also natural and whole numbers because they are not divided up into fractions or decimals.

  12. One number that is rational but is not an integer is 4/5. This is a rational number because it can be written as a terminating decimal.

  13. I would like to comment on what Caleigh McLoughlin posted, I really like the way you explained your answer and it is very easy to understand. You could have added that integers include positive whole numbers, negative whole numbers, and zero.

  14. A rational number that is not an integer is -56.5

A rational number are all numbers that can be written as a frcation; integer/integer. a integer is an whole number and their opposites like -5 and 5. -56.5 is not an integer because it is not a whole number, but it's between thw whole numbers of 56 and 57.

  16. I would like to comment on what Melanie posted. Melanie posted her blog very well. It was very easy to understand and it was very detailed. For example, when she wrote that it can be written as a fraction, she added that it has to be written as integer over integer.

  18. One number that is rational but not an integer is .97. This is not an integer because it is not a whole number, but is rational because it can be written as a fraction(97/100.)

    ReplyDelete
  19. A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction, so any fraction, such as 88/100 (22/25.) Any WHOLE number and/or its opposite is rational an integer, but it has to be a whole number, not a fraction or a decimal. Any decimal that is a non-terminating, non repeating decimal (such as .65) can be written as a fraction, so it is also rational.

    ReplyDelete
  20. A rational number that is not an integer is 1/4. 1/4 is a rational number because it is a fraction. Also, it can be written as a decimal as 0.25. The decimal is a terminating decimal. Finally, 1/4 is a rational number that is not an integer.

    ReplyDelete
  21. A rational number that is not an integer is 3/4. This is because rational numbers are numbers that can be written as fractions, integer over integer. Integers are whole numbers and their opposites (negative and positive). 3/4 is written as a fraction, integer over integer, and it is not an integer.

  22. I would like to comment on what Denise posted. It was easy to understand and it was good how she explained how she got from a decimal to a fraction to prove how her number was rational but not an integer. I also like how she explained the meaning of rational numbers and integers.

  23. I just want to comment on Andrew Eng's post and say that he did not really explain what integers where. Integers are just whole numbers and their opposites a.k.a negatives and positives.

    ReplyDelete
  24. A rational number is a number that can be a fraction. An integer is a whole number and their opposites(negatives). An example of one is the number 75. 75 is an integer because an integer is a whole number and a whole number is the counting numbers and 0 so,it is an integer. It is rational because rational means a fraction 75 can become a fraction easily but but 1 under 75. This is an integer and a rational number.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A rational number that is not an integer can be 5 1/5. This number is rational because fractions are rational numbers.

  28. -4 1/2 is a rational number that is not an integer. It is a rational number because rational numbers are numbers that can be written as a fraction with an integer over integer. It is not an integer because integers are numbers that are whole numbers and their opposites. -4 1/2 is not a whole number, or it's opposite.

    ReplyDelete
  29. An example of a rational number that is not a integer is 0.05. The reason why it is not a integer but a rational number is because a integer is a number and its opposite. An rational number is a number and its opposite and decimals. It also includes fractions

    ReplyDelete
  30. A rational number that is not an integer is 3/4. A rational number can be written as fraction (integer over integer). An integer is whole numbers and their opposites, so 1 and 4 are integers. But 3/4 is not a whole number or its opposite. Therefore this proves that 3/4 is a rational number.

  31. Typo* sentence 3 ~ 3 and 4 are integers

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oops... Accidently have same number as Nikhil..
A rational number that is not an integer is 2/5. A rational number can be written as fraction (integer over integer). An integer is whole numbers and their opposites, so 2 and 5 are integers. But 2/5 is not a whole number or its opposite. Therefore this proves that 2/5 is a rational number.

I love Andrew's number but I would like to see him turn it into a fraction:)

Metsfan could you please reveal your real identify. I am sure Metsfan could mean a lot of students:)

  34. my number is 7/9
an integer is a whole number and its opposite
a rational number is integer over integer
this is not a integer because it is a fraction, not a whole number

  35. A rational number that is not an integer is 78.92. A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction. Rational numbers include terminating decimals, nonterminating decimals, fractions, and integers. An integer is any whole number and it's opposite. Integers don't include decimals, which shows that 78.92 is not an integer. It can be written as a fraction (integer over integer), so it is a rational number.

  36. Hi, I think an example of arational number is 4/5, because a rational number is a number that can be turned into a fraction. And 4/5 is a fraction. So by logic 4/5 is a rational number.

  37. I would like to go back to what Andrew said. I have a question. Is that the whole number or just a part because if it's a non repeating or terminating it's irrational. And if it's repeating you should put a bar.

  38. Well an integer is a whole number and its opposites (negative numbers) and decimals are rational and are not whole numbers so an example of a rational number that is not an integer is 0.56. (a rational number is a number that can be written as a fraction. Integer over Integer)

  39. A rational number that is not a integer is 2.7 or any decimals.
Why? A rational number is every number but irrational numbers. An integer is all whole numbers and negative numbers. Are decimals integers ? No they are not all decimals are not integers, but they are Rational . AM I RIGHT/ ?????

  44. I would like to comment on what Moshe said. Um, Andrew's number is a really long terminating decimal. That is why he has a period at the end. If it was repeating then it would have a "..."

  47. i would like to comment on andrew's number and how long it is, but yo shoule explain why it's rational, but not an integer.

    ReplyDelete
  48. .1 Would work because it is rational since it can be put integer over integer. .1 Isn't an integer because integers are whole numbers and there opposites. decimals and fractions aren't integers.

    ReplyDelete
  49. i would like to comment on Andrew's number
It is so long, can you make it into a smaller fraction

    ReplyDelete
  50. A rational number is 13.2 because decimals are rational numbers and you can change it into a fraction which is also rational. 13.2 is not an integer because integers are only whole numbers and their opposites.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would like to comment on Melanie's post. Melanie your explanation is very detailed and it helps me a lot. I like how you said, "integer over integer."
